In an ever-growing oven market, homeowners can now choose among a variety of ovens. However, gas ovens still remain a popular choice. If you currently have a gas oven that requires repeated repairs, it is probably the time to replace it. But when you plan to replace a gas oven, the difficult aspect is not to choose the right oven but to install it correctly.

If you are looking for a gas oven replacement, this guide is for you. Here you will find out what to look for in a gas oven and how to choose the right gas plumber along with steps that your gas plumber will follow to install a gas oven in your kitchen. So let’s get started.

What to Look for in a Gas Oven?

A gas oven is usually an expensive and long term investment. Therefore, it is important that you give enough thought before you finalize your gas oven. Here are a few considerations that can help you make the right choice:

  • Size of the Oven - not just the number of burner tops but also the dimensions keeping in mind the size of the existing oven that is installed in your kitchen.
  • Material – Most gas ovens are made up of stainless steel but you can also find oven stoves that are made of glass and fiber.
  • Ease of Cleaning – Since an oven is used for cooking, it is prone to getting dirty repeatedly. Choose a gas oven that is easy to clean.
  • Brand – Go for a brand that is reliable and offers a warranty.

While keeping all the above factors in mind is important, your budget will still remain one of the most important considerations when choosing a gas oven.

What to Look for in a Gas Line Plumber?

Most homeowners prefer to save cost and try DIY methods to install a gas oven at home. However, this method of saving cost can be quite dangerous and often result in gas leakages that can be life-threatening. Therefore, it is best to hire a professional gas plumber who can install the oven in your home. If you are looking for a professional gas plumber to install a gas oven in your home, make sure the plumber has:

  • A license from a professional body
  • Has a few years of experience
  • An insurance that can cover the potential damage to the plumber and your property and...
  • Has an established reputation in the industry

Gas Oven Installation – A Complete Guide

Now that you already know what to look for in a gas oven and the key considerations when hiring a gas plumber, it is time to know how a professional gas plumber will install an oven in your home. Having this information is critical because it allows you to be prepared in case your plumber slips on one or more steps. Let’s get started with your guide to gas oven installation.

Step 1 – Pull out the Range

The first and most important step when it comes to oven installation is the removal of the existing range. Your professional plumber will shut off the gas supply (which is usually located behind the range or in the basement right below the range) and pull it. Shutting off the gas supply is a safety protocol that your gas liner plumber must follow.

Step 2 – Wrap the Pipes

Once the oven is pulled out, your professional plumber will wrap the yellow Teflon pipe-joint tape around the thread in a clockwise direction. Make sure the tape is wrapped twice. We recommend using a yellow Teflon tape as it is heavier than the white tape and is meant for gas fittings.

Connectors with ½-in end fittings at the two ends are not always available so the 1/2-in. x 3/4-in. coupling is intended to accommodate the 3/4-in. end connector fitting.

Step 3 – Attach the Connectors

Attaching the connector is perhaps the most technical aspect of gas oven installation. And it is for this step that you need a professional plumber the most because most homeowners can’t do it right. As important it is to attach the connectors properly, it is equally important to have the right connectors for your range. The best connectors come with a ½-in fitting at each end. However, in case you can’t one, you can also go for a 1/2-in. x 3/4-in. connector. Moreover, never reuse a connector. Even when your existing connector is in good condition, it is best to use a new connector for a new oven.

Step 4 – Use a Street Elbow

Once the connectors are attached, the next step is to use a street elbow. First, screw the street elbow in the gas line, then tighten the connectors into the street elbow. Your plumber will use a Teflon tape at each end however, the tape should not be wrapped too tightly.

Step 5 – Tighten the Nuts

Finally, you need to tighten the connector nuts with the connector fittings. As your plumber tightens the nuts, make sure they hold the tube straight against the fitting. While this step requires the use of simple equipment, it needs to be done with precision and this is exactly why you need a professional plumber for a gas oven installation.

Step 6 – Check for Leaks

Once the installation process is complete, don’t forget to check for leaks. Turn on the gas supply and let your burners burn for at least one minute. Then your plumber will use a leak detector spray to check for any leaks in or around the connectors or joints.
