Are you tired of rodents and stray cats fumbling through your trash cans and making a mess all over your front or back yard? Are you looking for a better alternative of getting rid of all the leftover food and other waste?

Proper disposal of waste is essential in ensuring that your home is free from any threats that can be posed by inappropriately disposed waste. If you want to keep a clean and healthy environment, then you can either clean your place constantly or install a garbage disposal unit to help dispose off leftover food scraps and other waste items that could attract insects and rodents.

A garbage disposal unit is installed under the kitchen sink and you can put any leftovers or other food waste into it. The disposal unit grinds the waste, liquefies it and drains them down the sewer pipe; saving you a lot of trouble that can be caused by turned over trash bins.

Garbage Disposal Maintenance

Even the best electronic goods are prone to wear and damage over the years, and if not taken care of properly, they can cause a lot of trouble and prove to be costly in terms of both time and money. The best way to avoid costly replacement or repairs of the garbage disposal unit is to ensure you perform proper maintenance, periodically.

Ways to keep your garbage disposal unit in excellent working condition and avoid obnoxious smells emanating from it are:

  • Pour half a cup of baking soda and about one cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture mix in the grinder for about 10 minutes before allowing it to drain. Pour half a gallon of hot water to clear out the drain.
  • To break down grease in the disposal unit or the drain, pour a mixture of bleach and water into the disposal unit. After a while leave the cold water running for bit to wash out any grease or other sticky substances thoroughly.
  • Check all the nuts and bolts of your garbage disposal unit regularly to ensure that there is no leakage. Depending on where the leak is, you may be able to fix it by tightening any nuts or bolts around the leakage area.
  • If your garbage disposal is not draining out properly, it is most likely clogged. You can use drain cleaners to clear out the clogs but be very careful with the type of cleaner you use. Certain drain cleaners have chemicals that can harm the mechanisms of the disposal unit.
