Common Plumbing Problems You Can Deal With Yourself

At the Mesa Plumbing Company, we highly recommend that you hire the services of expertly trained and experienced technicians when it comes to dealing with plumbing issues. As much as we like getting more business, we also believe that homeowners should save their money where they can.

While most of the common plumbing problems require the use of expertise, there are some issues which homeowners can deal with themselves. We are going to take a look at some of the common plumbing problems you can deal with yourself. Anything even slightly more complicated than what we’re going to tell you is something you should call us in to deal with.

1) - Jammed Garbage Disposal

Every homeowner has faced a jammed garbage disposal problem at some point in their life. In fact, it’s a problem you have to deal with quite a bit. It’s quite common that small items can get stuck inside the garbage disposal system. That pesky top off of your favorite can of soda is the perpetrator most of the time. Now, many people call us at Mesa Plumbing to deal with this issue and we are more than happy to help them. The thing is, this is a very small issue that you can easily fix yourself. You just need the right tools and you should know what you need to do.

First off, you have to shut off the power to the garbage disposal unit. Once that’s done, you can rest assured that you’re not getting injured while trying to fix the problem. Now you need an Allen wrench. It’s usually attached with the motor of your garbage disposal unit. Turn the disposal blades using the Allen wrench by inserting the tool into the bottom of the unit. In a matter of seconds, you’re going to free the item. All you have to do now is remove it, turn on the power and see if the problem is resolved. It will start working now but if it doesn’t, you should call Mesa Plumbing to investigate the issue.

2) - Common Toilet Issues

The toilet hosts the most common plumbing problems. Typically, the problem is that it’s not flushing properly. This is not something you need professional help for, most of the time. This usually happens because the tank at the back of the toilet seat is not filled properly before it flushes or because the mechanism is faulty.

Again, a common plumbing problem that we’re called in for but you can deal with it yourself. Open the lid of the tank and look for anything that might be obstructing the tank filling. Remove anything that looks like it doesn’t belong there (anything that will be easy to remove). Alternatively, the problem could be with the chain. It tends to break loose from time to time and all you need to do is attach it again. Either of these can solve the issue but sometimes you need to replace the mechanism, especially if the toilet is 5 or 6 years old. As things age, they tend do experience wear and tear and all you need to do to fix the issue is to replace the faulty part.

If you cannot find the source of the problem or if the tank seems like it’s cracked or leaking, you should call Mesa Plumbing. These are the kinds of common plumbing problems that you are more likely to make worse if you don’t have the tools and knowledge to address them. Call us immediately if you are not sure what the problem is.

3) - Leaky Faucets

A leaky faucet is another common plumbing problem that we at Mesa Plumbing feel like you can deal with yourself. It won’t take more than an hour to fix it. Just turn on the faucet that is leaking, shut off the water supply that’s under the faucet in question. Your leaky faucet is now ready to be fixed.

Now you need to remove the handle. It’s important to keep in mind that as you’re disassembling it, you should keep the parts in the same order you removed them. This will make your life easier when putting it all back together. When you’ve disassembled the leaky faucet, look inside the valve. The most common culprits are damaged gaskets inside the valve and mineral deposits. If the problem is mineral deposits, use some vinegar and the mineral deposits will be history. Just replace the damaged parts if that’s the problem and reassemble your faucet. You’ll be good to go.

4) - Clearing A Blocked Drain

Before we elaborate on this one, you should know that we’re talking about clearing a single drain and not the whole plumbing system. For a severely blocked drain, you should call Mesa Plumbing to handle it.

Now, blocked drains are a common plumbing problem. We’ve all faced them. It’s very obvious to notice them because the water drains down slowly or it makes a strange gurgling noise as it goes down. There’s also the odd chance that you’re going to smell something funny. To clear the drain, you first need to look for the blockage. If you can see it, you’ll be able to remove it with the old wire hanger trick. Most of the time, it’s just clumped hair and soap in the drain, which you can easily pull out with a wire hanger. If it’s softer items like fatty deposits or grease, boiling hot water mixed with a bit of detergent will do the trick.
